To Do or Not To Do?

Every now and then, What The Hill will be featuring special articles written by local business owners and CHAMPS members–giving you a more personal look at the folks who make our neighborhood economy unique. Today we head to Market Row for To Do or Not To Do: 5 Things You Should Know for Better Hair, by Mickey Bolek of Michael Anthony Salon:

“I have been doing hair for 25 years and in those years I have been asked some of the same questions over and over again. Here is a list of answers to some of those questions that will help you have head-turning hair.

1. If you really want your hair to have fullness and movement you must use styling products and a blow dryer. As the old saying goes “We are beauticians not magicians.” We can cut a great shape but the “style” comes from your at-home styling. Never be afraid to ask your stylist for tips.

2. Flat irons are great for creating modern looks. BUT … these instruments can reach temperatures of 450 degrees and can burn the hair if not used properly. Remember to move the iron through the hair quickly, repeat if needed, and always use a heat protecting product to protect and keep the style.

3. Many shampoos and conditioners purchased in drug and grocery stores (non salon brands) are not always the most economical route. Some shampoos contain harsh detergents and may not be concentrated, giving you dry hair and forcing you to use more to get a great lather. Conditioners can contain synthetic waxes that build up, leaving your hair dull, dry looking, and starved for moisture. Now, I am in no way saying there aren’t good non-salon brands available; I think it’s best to ask your stylist what salon product is best for your hair type and your pocket book. I personally think Paul Mitchell products are a great choice. And remember if you see salon products in the drug store they could be counterfeit and/or tampered with and could, in the long run, cost more that buying them in a salon.

4. While you are putting away the winter clothes think about changing your hair wardrobe. Summer is just around the corner and with that comes the side effects of sun, chlorine, and humidity. The Paul Mitchell Company carries a wonderful sun block (Color Protect Locking Spray) just as good for non-colored hair and scalp protection. Shampoo Three is the best for swimming pool hair and Sculpting Foam is the best all around styling product to help keep hair full and tame in humid weather.

5. NEVER CUT YOUR OWN BANGS!!!!!! It has been my experience that you will regret it and it can take a long time to grow them out. So step away from the mirror, put down the scissors or cuticle cutters, and call your stylist now. He or she will always know what to do.”
